This hollow-framed, wooden paddle board is infused with incredible history.

The bottom deck's sun rays are made from two sources of salvaged redwood by way of Alibi Interiors including a stave from a 120-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon tank. The light-colored rays are Alaskan yellow cedar offcuts from the Western Flyer boat restoration project. The "water" is made of fiddleback redwood salvaged from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The sun is an unknown species of spalted wood from Alibi Interiors.

The top deck includes Alaskan yellow cedar from the Western Flyer project; Indian rosewood, mahogany, and spruce from Santa Cruz Guitar Company production offcuts; salvaged elm from San Jose State University and salvaged redwood from Ohlone College, both by way of Mission Bell Manufacturing; and walnut and maple from Meier Brothers Furniture. The nail holes in the salvaged redwood have been filled with Entropy Resins bio-based epoxy mixed with Aztec gold pigment from Black Diamond Pigments. Handle of water tank redwood from OG Redwood.

The tail block is made of Doug fir hull wood from the original Western Flyer boat, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts and crew chartered this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck publishedWestern Flyer his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and Ventana's use of its wood.

The vent and leash plugs are flute offcuts made with elm from San Jose State University and salvaged black walnut. The leash plug has an inlaid rising sun offcut left over from the creation of the bottom deck.

The fin box will accept any longboard style fin. The rails are made of cork which is more resistant to dings. There are two sheets of Aerialite 6-ounce fiberglass on top and one on bottom. The epoxy is Entropy bio-based epoxy resin which is up to 40% tree sap and is very strong and light.

We included matching paddles of different lengths with blades made of oxidized white oak from the original ribs of the Western Flyer boat and spalted driftwood from a local beach. The shafts are made using the bird beak joinery method from salvaged cherry and black walnut.

As with all Ventana Surfboards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.

This board is hollow, lightweight and will paddle as great as it looks. Given the uniqueness of each side, it's two art pieces in one.

Hand crafted in Santa Cruz, California by master artisan Martijn Stiphout.
