This 7'0' sunburst disc with a rounded pin tail is a stunning, performance work of art. The top and bottom are totally distinct, creating two art pieces for conversation in the line up and/or the home.

The primary wood on the gorgeous top deck is Bay laurel reclaimed during the preservation project of the historic cooperage building on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus. The long, stringer stripes are from redwood floorboards from the Schwan Victorian mansion in Santa Cruz, California. The house was built of locally milled, old growth wood in the 1890's, and these clear grain, heart redwood floorboards served the residents through the early 2000's when the house was demolished. The wood is at least 1000 years old. The small pieces of inlaid wood on the stringer are of spruce, rosewood and Honduras mahogany from Santa Cruz Guitar Company offcuts. This legendary company has been making exceptional guitars for the likes of Johnny Cash, Ben Harper, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Buffet and hundreds of others since 1976. The guitar wood is displayed between two long strips of ash upcycled from a cabinet shop's offcuts.

There is also a small dot of abalone inlaid in the cork at the tip of the top deck.

The bottom deck is the classic Ventana sunburst design. The sun rays rising over the water are of redwood and Douglas fir reclaimed from an old house in Capitola, California owned by MMA fighter, Gray Maynard. The rippled 'water' is mahogany offcut from a cabinet shop in Santa Cruz. The 'sun' is sapele from the same shop.

John SteinbeckThe fin is also Bay laurel from the cooperage building and the swirl stripes are redwood reclaimed from John Steinbeck's house in Pacific Grove, California. Woodworker René Gaudette, Monterey Bay Aquarium Teen Conservation Leader volunteer and employee of Houston's Home Improvement & Repair, was inspired by Ventana's sustainable product development approach. René has been working on the restoration of John Steinbeck's cottage house and generously provided us with redwood boards removed from the foundation and the bathroom of the home. The cottage was originally owned by Steinbeck's father and was John's residence beginning in 1928 when he and his wife, Carol, returned to the area. John published his first novel, Cup of Gold, the following year. That novel, along with others, was written in the house.

The rails are made of oak cork, and it was glassed with Entropy Super Sap 100 Bio Resin made with mostly tree sap and 4oz. fiberglass cloth (two layers on top and one on bottom). As with all Ventana boards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.
